Using Yakima HoldUp EVO for 1-1/4” Hitches on a 2” Hitch Receiver
Question:
I ordered this bike rack y02480 and didn’t realize my fault that it is for 1 1/4” hitches. I have a 2 “. The instructions state you should not use an adapter. Can you tell me the reason why. I no longer have the box for this bike rack so I can’t return it. Any suggestions?

I definitely have some options so that you can use your Yakima Hold-Up EVO Bike rack # Y02480, but the reason Yakima does not recommend using an adapter with this bike rack is because most hitch adapters reduce the weight capacity of your hitch by half. An example of that is this Curt Hitch Adapter # C45770 that not only makes your hitch smaller to fit 1-1/4" accessories, but it also extends out by 4" if you need extra length for clearance issues. The drawback is your weight capacity is halved with this adapter.
The recommended option by Yakima is to replace the actual tongue of your bike rack with replacement part # 8880826 for the Yakima HoldUp EVO for 2" Hitches # Y02479. This method will convert your bike rack itself into one compatible with your 2" hitch and it will keep it within Yakima's original bike rack design.
There is an adapter, the Brophy Hitch reducer # HT02 that has a special sleeve design so that you can use 1-1/4" accessories with your hitch and does not reduce weight capacity, which I think is awesome. You can also use this with other accessories beside your Yakima HoldUp EVO # Y02480.
