Will SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs Help With Trailer Bottoming Out

Question:

Hi, I have a new 17 ft single axle travel trailer with a 3500 lb axle. The leaf springs are mounted below the axle. When hitting bumps, the suspension will bottom out resulting in the tire striking the inside of the wheel well, as well as the axle U-bolt actually contacting the bottom of the frame. Would this part be the best solution to prevent damage? If so, are there any particular measurements that I need to verify before ordering? Would replacing the springs be a better alternative? If so, do you have a recommendation? Thank you

Instead of replacing your leaf springs, the best solution for the issue you are having bottoming out is the SumoSprings Trailer Helper Springs # TSS-106-40.

The reason is these will sit on the leaf spring and take the brunt of the capacity and cushion the ride, but you do need to have 7-1/2 inches of space from the leaf spring to the trailer frame.

Otherwise, if you don't have that amount of space the best option would be to mount the leaf springs on top of the axle, and for that you would simply need an over/under kit, which for a 3,500 lb axle would be the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00.

These will raise the trailer approximately the same amount as your axle's diameter plus the height of the leaf spring pack.
