Replacing a Dexter Axle with a Serial Number

Question:

I have a Dexter p-15 model SLR SN 2946609 That is all the info I can find on my axle. Is this enough info to determine a replacement axle?

Normally, with a serial number on your Dexter Axle, we are able to determine a proper replacement for your axle. However, after having spoken with Dexter, the only information they were able to provide was that it was made in 1998 and has a capacity between 2K and 8K.

This serial number is very old, so they weren't able to provide enough information to pinpoint an exact replacement.

In order for you to get the right replacement, there are a couple of measurements that can help us determine which you need.

First is the length. Measure from the hub face to the other hub face to determine the proper length. Also measure the spring seat length. I've attached a picture that illustrate these lengths.

Next is the diameter of the axle rod. With that measurement, we can find the axel's capacity. They usually fall within these parameters:

- 1,000-lb - 2,000-lb Axles: 1-1/2 inch - 1-3/4 inch diameter
- 3,500-lb Axles: 2-3/8 inch diameter
- 6,000-lb - 7,200-lb Axles: 3 inch diameter
- 8,000-lb Axles: 3-1/2 inch diameter
- 9,000-lb Axles: 4 inch diameter
- 10,000-lb Or more axles: 5 inch diameter

With the two lengths and capacity, we will be able to get you the correct replacement.
