Recommended Snow Tire Chains for my 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Question:

Can you put Tire chains on a 2021 Toyota highlander hybrid? The manual says you can only use them on the front axle. Where i live i need chains on all 4 tires. Im looking at getting an awd highlander hybrid. Is there something that prohibits you from chaining the rear axle? Is it because it is a electric only powered axle? I have called multiple dealerships and no one can give me a good answer. Can you please help?

I am unable to access the 2021 Toyota Highlander owner's manual but I have found the same information you are finding in regard to them only allowing the use of them on the front drive wheels. For the 235/55-20 tire size part # TH2004705255 and for the 235/65-18 tire size part # TH2004705255 are excellent chains that will provide really good traction when you need it. They are substantial enough to get a bite unlike cable types without being too big and bulky.

I found no explanation for this in writing but it is very likely that there simply isn't enough space back there. They generally don't have near the clearance in the rear wheel wells as what the front wheel wells have. With all of the components back there it is not a good idea to take the chance.

I can't recommend using chains on the back of the vehicle since it clearly states it should not be done. You may want to consider a set of winter tires for the rear axle to get some additional traction. I have been really impressed by the Firestone winter tires in the past.
