Brakes Jerk and Grab when Braking Using Curt Echo Brake Controller # C51180

Question:

I have a 2007 Jeep Commander. I pull a Sunlite 16bh trailer. Less than 3000 lbs. The controller worked smoothly the first few times I took it out, but now the brakes jerk and grab when applied. The response it set at 10, and the sensitivity set at 2. I tried changing to 15/1, 10/1 with no improvement. The hitch and wiring on the Jeep is new, and the trailer is a 2020 that we bought new. Thank you for your input.

In order to troubleshoot your braking issues with the Curt Echo # C51180, first start by adjusting the output settings on your controller. Curt recommends testing the controller output by driving forward on a dry and level paved or concrete surface. At approximately 25 mph, apply the vehicle's brakes. If the trailer brakes lock up, decrease the max output. Repeat this process until stops are firm, just short of lock up. Then repeat the same process for setting the sensitivity until you are able to come to a smooth stop.

If changing the output and sensitivity on the brake controller, you may need to adjust the setting on your trailer brakes. Check out the video linked below for details on how to properly set your brakes.
