Recommended Demco Hijacker Autoslide Compatible with 2012 GMC Sierra and 2021 GMC Sierra
Question:
I need a Demco automatic sliding fifth wheel hitch for my current truck AND for my incoming new truck. The current truck is a 2012 GMC 2500HD and the incoming truck is a 2021 GMC 3500HD with the fifth wheel/goose neck prep option. The bed lengths are 66inch and 611inch respectively. I dont know what model will work on both applications. I dont know if I would get above bed mounting rails or below bed. I suppose I should buy whats best and simplest to install in the new truck and just get whats needed for the old truck for temporary use. Also the trailer max GVWR is 15,500 lbs. so would I be smart to buy an 18k unit or a 21k unit. I want a robust and durable hitch, the weight of it is not important to me. Most importantly I want a hitch that will into the prepared bed of the new truck easily and yet still work temporarily on the old truck that has no fifth wheel preparation package. Thank you for your answers.

I have a solution for you, but Demco does not make a hitch that will drop directly into the pucks on a GMC truck, so you would have to use an adapter on the new truck. For the hitch, you can use the Demco Hijacker Autoslide # DM8550035; this hitch has a 21k capacity and will fit into industry standard base rails or the adapter mentioned below. I think it's always a good bet to go up to a higher capacity if there's a chance that you might end up with a trailer that's higher weight; so if you think that you might end up with a trailer with a GVWR of 18k at some point it's always a good idea to get the higher capacity hitch. The 18k Demco Hijacker Autoslide is part # DM8550034 if you decide you'll have this trailer as long as you'll have your new truck.
To mount this hitch in your 2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD you'll want to use the above bed rail kit # DM8552011-71 which is custom fit, so it won't require any drilling to install. To mount the Hijacker Autoslide in your 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD you'll need to use the Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter for Chevy/GMC OEM 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package - 21K # DM6333, which will install into the OEM prep package and provide you with industry standard base rails to mount the # DM8550035 hitch.
I've linked some review and installation videos of these parts for you to have a look at.
