Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch 14934 Cable Length Compatibility With Boat Lift

Question:

I have just bought this winch for a Shoremaster cantilever boat lift. When the lift is fully extended about 15 ft of cable are outside the drum. I need to get new cable for this and want to know what length would be appropriate. I know I need some cable still on the drum when fully extended, but how much is appropriate. It seems like buying a 25 ft length of 7/32 cable would leave a sufficient amount on the drum, but I notice you recommend 50ft. Is that overkill for my application or is there some benefit to having lots of cable wrapped around the drum?

The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake - TUFFPLATE Finish - 1,200 lbs # DL14934 doesn't have a mechanical advantage from having extra cable wrapped around the drum. The Hand Winch Cable with Safety Hook 7/32" Diameter x 25' Long - 2,500 lbs. # DL24047 is a great option for your application and will work well with this winch.
