Will Adding a Third Axle to A trailer Affect Its Tongue Weight

Question:

I want to extend my dual axel trailer and add a third axel. If I extend the trailer by 33, which is the exact distance between the current axels and then place the third axel in the rear of the current two and maintain the existing spacing in the existing axels will my tongue weight remain pretty static?

Expert Reply:

Assuming that the way the load is distributed on the trailer isn't changing, adding the third axle shouldn't have much of an effect on the tongue weight. It will however better disperse the weight of the trailer down to the ground, resulting in less wear and tear on the suspension and running components like wheels, hubs and bearings assuming that the load on the trailer isn't increased.
