Hitch and E-Bike Rack that Can Fit 2017 Kia Soul
Question:
Instructions with my Current rack state not to use with a class 1, 1 1/4 receiver hitch. That is the only hitch available for my Kia Soul. The Current can hold two 60 pound bikes and weighs 33 pounds for a total tongue weight of 153 pounds, well under the class 1 tongue weight limit of 200 pounds. Why then would I not be able to use my Current on a class 1 rack? Is there some kind of preventer on the bike rack so that it will not into a class 1 hitch receiver?

Expert Reply:
For Class II only bike racks like the Swagman Current part # S64678 there is actually a mechanism that prevents it form installing in a Class I hitch. The idea is that the bikes are going to be heavier since it's an e-bike rack which would stress the hitch. So since there are only Class I hitches for your 2017 Kia Soul like the Curt # C11419 you'd need an E-bike rack that is Class I hitch compatible like the Thule Easy Fold XT part # TH903202.
