Can Reese Chain Hangers # RP58305 Be Installed on a 3 Inch Wide Frame if Longer Bolts are Used
Question:
Is the maximum frame width 2.25 determination driven by the length of the provided hardware? I have a 3X5inch box tube frame on my boat trailer and I wanted to through bolt and mount these plates opposite of one another one on each side of the frame. I can buy some longer grade 8 hardware to make this work. I cant see why this would be an issue. Please advise.

Yes, the hardware that is included with the chain hangers, # RP58305, is only good for frames up to 2-1/4 inches wide. I have been told by Reese that you can use longer bolts to mount the hangers on the frame. This is provided that the larger frame is still within the proper mounting specs in the weight distribution system instructions.
You mentioned mounting one on each side of the frame so it sounds like you want to use them for another purpose. If so please keep in mind that they have not been tested for any other use other than using them as an alternative to the Reese lift-up brackets for chain hanger weight distribution systems. I have linked instructions for you.
If your boat trailer has a pole tongue then you will need to use a pole tongue adapter, # RP58393, and the only system you can use is a Reese SC weight distribution system, not a chain hanging type of system.
