Cab Clearance on a Short Bed 2018 Ram 3500 with a Goose Box and a 2019 Solitude 310GK

Question:

I have a 2018 RAM 3500 SRW, with a 64inch bed. OEM 5W package I tow a 2019 Solitude 310GK and am concerned about the turning radius and cab clearance with the goose box. Can you provide any feedback or information as to the tailgate and side rail clearances or the turning radius with this setup?

With a factory prep package on your 2018 Ram 3500 and a goose box, you will need the following numbers to calculate your clearance:

A = Distance from center of gooseneck ball to truck cab
B = Length of offset (this will be zero for the Goose Box and no offset ball)
C = Width of trailer divided by 2

Then, use this formula: A + B - C = Clearance

The clearance needs to be at least 4 inches to ensure you can make a 90 degree turn without interference. A goose box, like the Reese Goose Box, part # RP85FR, does not help with additional clearance.

Since you have a short bed truck, your best option is to utilize the 5th wheel capabilities of your factory prep package instead of the gooseneck. With that, you could opt for a sliding 5th wheel to give you better clearance. I recommend the B and W Companion, part # BWRVK3670. It will give you an additional 12 inches of clearance and features dual jaws for less rattle and a rail-free design that gives you full access to your truck bed when it's not hooked up. I've linked to a video review of this hitch on a Ram 3500 for your consideration.
