Is It Better To Use 1-1/4" or 2" Hitch on 2020 Mazda CX-9 for 5 Bike Rack

Question:

I notice that a number of 5 bike racks are designed for 1.25inch hitch and come with adaptor so they fit into a 2inch hitch Yakima Fulltilt, Thule Apex. That does not seem very stable to me and has potential for wobble and instability. Can you comment on the stability racks vs racks that are designed specifically for 2inch receiver such as Hollywood Road Runner, Curt Premium 5. I have a 2020 Mazda CX-9. In ing which hitch to install on the car, is it better to install a 1.25 hitch and go without the adaptor rather than a 2inch hitch and use the adaptor? Thank you

In regards to stability, using a 1-1/4" shank with a 1-1/4" hitch will be more sturdy than using a 1-1/4" shank with 2" adapter with a 2" hitch. However, the 2" hitch will have a greater weight capacity than a 1-1/4" hitch which may be needed for five bikes so the latter is what I recommend. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13284 with the Thule Apex XT 5 Bike Rack part # TH9026XT is what I recommend. The SnugTite stinger on the Thule Apex will do a great job of reducing sway/rattle even while using a 2" hitch.
