Can Trailer Tires be Changed From 7.5-16 to 235/80-16 Radial Tires

Question:

I have a flatbed gooseneck with 7.50-16 tires, tandem axle duals. What size radials can I swap to without rubbing?

Helpful Expert Reply:

A 7.5-16 tire measures 31.8 inches in diameter and 8.4 inches side, so you may be able to switch to a 235/80-16 radial trailer tire, but it depends on how much room you have currently between the inside of your tire and your trailer frame. The rule is you need at least 1 inch of clearance, and a 235/80-16 tire measures 9.3 inches wide and 30.8 inches in diameter, so it is nearly a full inch wider.

So if you currently have at least 2 inches of clearance you can use a 235/80-16 tire, otherwise you would need to stick with your current tires.

If you wind up being able to use a 235/80-16 tire I highly recommend Westlake tires as they have a deep tread depth, significant 5-year warranty and even 2 years of free road side service should you ever need it. The right tire will depend on the capacity you need.

- 3,520 lb Capacity: Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # LHWL401

- 4,080 lb Capacity: Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range G # WE76FR
