Weight Distribution System for 6000 lb 16ft Enclosed Car Trailer Towed By 2005 Ford Excusrion

Question:

I have a 2005 2wd v10 excursion and will be towing a 16ft. Enclosed car trailer weighing about 6000lbs. The tongue weight is about 800lbs. The trailer has a v nose and doesnt have much exposed frame on the tongue. What would you recommend?

When choosing a weight distribution system, you want a system that can accommodate the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer PLUS the weight of anything stowed behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

If the 800 lb tongue weight figure you mentioned includes the fully loaded trailer tongue weight plus the weight of any gear behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle, the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System you referenced, part # RP66074 would be an excellent choice. This system is effective on trailers with tongue weights ranging from 600-1200 lbs, your tongue weight will fall pretty close to the middle of this range which is ideal. Along with the proven performance of the Reese Trunnion Bar system, the Strait-Line also provides the Dual-Cam sway control system. Rather than providing resistance against trailer sway, the Dual-Cam pro-actively works to prevent trailer sway before it can start.

Since you have limited frame access due to the V-nose, the Dual Cam can still be used if you have access to the underside of the frame. Instead of the chain hanger brackets included with the kit, you will need the bolt-on brackets, part # RP58305 if the top of the frame member is inaccessible.

I have linked you to our Weight Distribution FAQ article, as well as an article describing how to determine your trailer tongue weight.
