Compatibility of Curt A16 Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch on a 5.8’ Bed

Question:

Why is this hitch not recommended on beds shorter than 6’? A hitch store just installed this hitch on my 2014 Sierra with a 5.8’ bed. Will I have issues with this?

Slider hitches like the A16 # C16521 and other hitches that only travel the 12 inches fore and aft don't allow enough clearance for most trailers due to the short bed length. It is recommended to use a rotating pin box like a Sidewinder to give you 22 inches of clearance offset with a non-sliding hitch. There is one sliding hitch that is recommended for this bed size and it is the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 13,000 lbs # DM8550040. This specific hitch travels 22-1/2 inches.

I don't know if there are specific trailers that may work but manufacturers don't recommend using a sliding hitch in that short bed length because it is likely you will have contact issues with your cab and trailer when towing.
