Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes that Lock Up Sometimes Around Corners

Question:

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram and my trailer brakes have started locking up while turning and sometimes while trying to drive off after being parked. Why does the power on the brake controller go from 0 or 14 with nothing in between?

Expert Reply:

Sounds like you have an intermittent short between the 12 volt accessory circuit of the trailer wiring and the brake controller output circuit. I had this happen on a gooseneck trailer once and it was at the connector on the trailer. The bare wire right behind the connector needed to be taped up.

Around corners the harness might flex which is what is causing the full application of the brakes.
