Upgrading 8 Wheels to 12 Wheels on 1993 Rockwood Pop Up Camper

Question:

Im redoing an old 93 Rockwood pop-up, and the original wheels/tires are 8 4 on 4 hubs. AL-KO SF19 torsion axle, I think. The wheel-well opening is 24. I want to upgrade the hubs to 5 lug, and the wheels/tires to 12. The OD of 12 tires are typically between 20-21, right? So I should have some room. The bearings are L44649, so I guess that makes it a 1-1/16 spindle. Suggestions?

You are correct that tires on 12" wheels are in the range of about 20" - 22" for the outer diameter.

For your application I recommend using the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2K Axles # AKIHUB-545-2-2K which uses the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern and fits 8" - 12" wheels, and then the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 12" White Spoke Wheel # TA98RR which has an overall diameter of 20.63".

We normally recommend having about 4" of clearance between the tires and fenders to account for suspension flex. This setup will put you at about 3-1/2" of clearance so that is something you'll need to be mindful of.
