How to Determine Correct Weight Distribution Hitch for Travel Trailer With 800 lb Dry Tongue Weight

Question:

I’m looking at weight distribution hitches with sway control for my travel trailer. It has a DRY weight of 6,487 lbs. and the hitch DRY weight is 782 lbs. I’m comparing both the Fastway E2 versus the Husky Centerline TS. I’m not sure which model has the correct weight capacity for my setup. Can you please advise? Thanks!

In order to choose the best weight distribution system you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle.

The tongue weight is typically between 10% and 15% of your trailer's GVWR (maximum loaded capacity) but you'll want to verify it by using a scale such as the etrailer Tongue Weight and Payload Scale # e99044. From there, simply add on the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle and you'll have your TTW. The ideal system would be one in which your TTW falls somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity.

I recommend going with the Fastway system for its quality and based on the numbers you gave it is likely your TTW will be in the 1,000 lb range, and the correct system for that is the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-1200.

The Fastway system comes with everything you need for installation except for the 2-5/16" hitch ball, which is part # C40030; to assist with installing the hitch ball it is recommended you use Socket # EQ70-00-4800.

I have added a link to a video review for you to check out as well.
