Rhino-Rack or Yakima Platform Rack for Carrying Bikes on an SUV
Question:
Ok, thanks. So, exactly what would I need to mount the 54 inch wide lock and load and three bike racks for mountain bikes? Do you mind giving me the list of what I would need and total cost, including the platform? I have a 2016 BMW X5 with flush rails. Thank you.

If you're planning on loading bikes on a platform then the Yakima LockNLoad would be better than the Rhino-Rack Pioneer simply because the LockNLoad is a bit more user friendly when it comes to installing different types of carriers.
The 2 most common sizes for the LockNLoad are the 55" Long x 49" Wide # Y05044-39 and the 60" Long x 54" Wide # Y05045-39. All of the larger style require a 3-crossbar mounting system. If you can let me know what SUV you will be using for this I can make a recommendation for you.
One of the smallest roof mount bike racks available is the Kuat Trio # TR02 because it is a fork mount. This would be the type of carrier you could use to get the most amount of bikes up on top of your SUV. If you're talking about how people manage to lift the bike to load and unload I can say from the experience the answer to that question is "very carefully". Any time I've loaded/unloaded a bike from the roof of anything taller than a sedan I have personally used a stool like the Adjustable-Height, Folding Platform Step # S-150 which can be 4" - 8" tall.
