Correct Weight Distribution Hitch With Sway Control for 4800 Lb Camper
Question:
Hello! There is alot of information out there reguarding a hitch. I just purchased a 2021 Apex Nano 194BHS, Here are the specs: Hitch Weight: 428 lb. GVWR: 4800 lb. UVW. 3634 lb. I was going to purchase the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Round - 2-5/16inch Hitch Ball - 10K GTW - FA94-00-1061. Is this overkill since the trailer is fairly lightweight? I have a 2016 chevy colorado z71, crew cab short box with the tow package. I want something with sway control. Any suggestions? Adam

At the high and low extremes, your trailer's fully loaded tongue weight will be in the 450-750 lb range. Since the Fastway # FA94-00-1061 e2 system you'd looked at has a recommended loaded tongue weight range between 600-1000 lbs. It would work pretty well if your trailer tongue weight is above 600 lbs. If the loaded and ready to tow tongue weight is below 600 lbs, I'd recommend the lower rated e2 version, part # FA94-00-0600. The 1000 lb system includes the trailer ball, but for the 600 lb system you'll need # EQ91-00-6080 for a 2 inch ball or # EQ91-00-6100 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.
To make the best choice, you'll want to load up your camper as you'd have it when it's ready to tow then determine its tongue weight. You'll want to include the weight of anything carried in the truck bed behind the rear axle as well. A simple tongue weight scale like # e99044 works well for this, or there are a few other pretty easy ways to figure it out, I'll link you to a help article that explains a few of them.
