How To Carry a Kayak On a 2018 Ford F-150 While Towing

Question:

I have a 2018 Ford F-150 5 1/2 bed crew cab pickup. I have a 14 feet long sit on top kayak. The kayak weighs about 110 pounds. The kayak is about 36” wide. I pull an RV trailer that’s about 22 feet long with a Hensley hitch. I need a kayak mounting solution that allows me to haul the kayak and RV at the same time. The kayak can’t extend far past the upright tailgate or else it will get into the front of the RV. Ideally, I’d like a rack solution that is easily assembled and disassembled for when we’re not hauling the kayak. It would be great if the solution makes it easy for one person to load and unload the kayak. What do you suggest?

I have exactly what you need to carry your kayak while towing with a 2018 Ford F-150. I recommend first installing a front mount trailer hitch and then using a t-load with half roof rack. This option will ensure the kayak sits as far forward as possible so you don't have any issues with the nose of the trailer. I have attached the needed parts below.

Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 65067
Rhino-Rack T-Load Hitch Mounted Load Assist and Support part # RTL002
Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbar part # RRVA150B
Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Legs for Vortex Aero Crossbars part # RRRLKVAH
Custom DK Fit Kit for 2 Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Roof Rack Legs part # DK427H
