Brake assemblies are definitely side specific. If you put the wrong brake assembly on the wrong side of the trailer, the brakes won't work correctly, and could cause the trailer to jackknife. Brake Drums like the # AKHD-655-6-G-K you'd mentioned aren't side specific.
For the # AKHD-655-6-G-K brake drums you'd asked about, for electric brakes I'd recommend the # AKEBRK-7-SA self adjusting brake assemblies. After 20 or 25 braking events (best done in a big parking lot) the brakes will be dialed in and ready to go. If you have a hydraulic braking system, use # AKEBRK-7-D. To tell what brake assemblies go where, the shorter brake pad goes toward the front of the trailer.
