Recommended Way to Carry 5 Bikes on 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
Question:
Here is the summation: 1. We are a family of 5. Rarely do we take 5 bikes when we travel, but I kinda of would like to have that option. So we are considering the 5 bike Thule Pro. But it looks much more difficult or inconvenient than the platform model which attaches only on the tires. Also notice that most of our bikes would need the adapter. 2. So I wanted your thoughts on this. My Wife takes the kids biking from time to time, so she would be alone taking the bikes off an on, so I want something very easy. Her friend has the platform design and has really recommended that. 3. With platform though we can do a max of 4 bikes with the add-on. Correct? We are looking at the T2 Pro. 4. How about the Helium THULE platform, does that one allow for add ons as well? This one looks like its the best in class? Not sure what products to go with....

I'll start out by saying that there isn't a platform bike rack that will allow you to carry a total of 5 bikes; and you're correct that any rack available for 5 bikes would be a hanging rack that would require the use of an adapter bar like the Swagman Deluxe Bike Frame Adapter Bar for Women's, Children's, and Alternative Frame Bikes # 64005. I absolutely agree that the way to go, considering the situation, is to go with a 4 bike platform rack. I know you mentioned the Thule Helium Pro # TH44VR, but that rack is only available in a 2 bike rack with a 1 bike add on, so it's not going to be a great option for you.
With all of that said, the Thule T2 Pro XTR # TH69TX is a great solution for carrying 4 bikes and will be easy to load up because it's a platform rack. For those situations where you'll need to carry 5 bikes, you can add a SeaSucker Talon # 298-BT1004, which mounts to the roof of your 2011 Mercedes Benz GL-Class with heavy duty suction cups and provides you with a solution to carry a single bike. This is a fork mounting carrier, so you would need to remove the front wheel, but it's one of our most popular solutions for riders who don't want to add a roof rack system to their vehicle. I've you've never seen the SeaSucker in action, I've attached a cool video that shows more about how they work, and the best part is that they don't damage your roof.
