Hitch Weight Capacity Differences Between the 2017 and 2018 Volvo XC60

Question:

Hi, I am looking to purchase a 2017 or 2018 Volvo XC60 if it will safely haul my motorcycle carrier. I have a hitch mounted 600lb capacity motorcycle carrier that I use to haul a 350lb motorcycle. It looks like the receiver hitches you have on your website list significantly different tongue ratings, I see 400lb available for model year 2017 and 600lb available for 2018. Is there a real difference between these two XC60 model years or is the heavier receiver available for both years?

You are correct that the 2017 and 2018 models of the Volvo XC60 have varying capacities when it comes to hitches. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 13268 which is for the 2017 model has a 400 lb. tongue weight capacity while the Stealth Trailer Hitch Receiver part # SH87FR which is for the 2018 model year is rated for 600 lbs. of tongue weight.

The design of the vehicles are different enough that the hitches are not cross compatible. So to maximize the hitches capacity the 2018 is the way to go. You do want to check the owner's manual of the vehicle you choose to ensure that it is capable of handling the load as well.
