Converting a 4-way to a 7-way on a 2005 Ford F-150

Question:

im trying to hook up a 7 pin adapter to the existing 4 pin. under the frame i found the connector that branches off to the tail and license plate lights etc. At that connection it has a blue and an orange wire going into but not out. On the exit side of those wires is a little plug. I assume the blue is for the brakes. Is the orange for charging the trailer batteries?

You are correct, the wiring you found on your 2005 Ford F-150 is as you suspected. The blue wire is for the brake controller output and the orange wire is the auxiliary 12 volt power supply.

You could use the 12 volt aux as a circuit to maintain the charge on your trailer or basically run anything else that runs on a 12 volt system such as lights.

Check out the FAQ and picture I attached also.

For a 7-way I would recommend you get something like a Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole Vehicle End Trailer Connector # 30717 and attach the blue wire color for color and then run the orange wire to the black wire of the # 30717 and then connect the white wire to a clean metal surface for the ground.
