You do need a 5th wheel hitch that fits on the industry standard rails in order to properly install the Curt Custom 5th Wheel Installation Kit # C16418-204. Having your 5th wheel hitch present and available to assist with installation ensures that when you install the second rail that you've got a snug/secure fit.
If your truck doesn't already have a 7 way connector in the truck bed for your 5th wheel, I recommend using the Curt # C56070 in order to make connecting your 7 way much easier. This kit will install a 7 way plug in the bed of your truck so that you don't have to worry about stretching your cord from your pin box down to the bumper once the trailer is coupled.
I've also linked the instructions of the installation of this rail kit and our installation video for you to have a look at. You'll also see a photo of the instructions for this kit where it talks about this process.
