Can the Thule Enclosed Cargo Carrier Be Used without the Container
Question:
Can the tray be used for odd cargo i.e. taking the lawn mower or the snow blower to the shop for service and tune up, carrying bagged goods or pavers from the home store. Specifically Im worried about the look of the tray being plastic and whether the shank has side bars to avoid having the tray torque around the shank. To try and explain my concerns more. If the shank is just a 2inch sqare tube fitting into the tray base and then kept on by screws Im concerned that an off-balance load might twist the tray around the shank axis.

As long as you do not exceed the capacity for this Rola Enclosed Cargo Carrier # 59108 and the tongue weight rating of your hitch you could most definitely use the # TH665C without the container to carry cargo that would otherwise not fit in the container. However, the off balance load that you mentioned could cause a problem.
The capacity for this carrier is 150 lbs and the tongue weight capacity for your vehicle should be listed in the owners manual of your vehicle.
