If you are getting the connection light when there isn't a trailer connected it means there is a draw on the brake controller output pin. This can be due to corrosion at the connector, so I recommend using a little sand paper to clean the connector paying special attention to the 5 o'clock pin.

The Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller # 39510 will keep that light on for several minutes after you turn the vehicle off. It will take longer if there is movement in the vehicle. This is nothing to be concerned about as the LED draws so little power it would take 10,000 hours to drain a charged battery according to the manufacturer.
