Is Replacing Pivot Pin for Reese Titan 20K 5th Wheel Hitch Common

Question:

My pivot pin sheared off while driving down the interstate. It broke right at the base of the Reese Plate on the front and the pin almost slid out of the back. Before I order a replacement Id like to know if this was a freak accident or is it something that has happened before and the pins have been upgraded. My wife is now terrified that it will happen again well be in a horrible accident. I dont know how to add a picture but if you give me a number I can forward a picture to you.

I'm glad to hear that you and your wife are okay as that can be a terrifying experience.

I reached out to my contact at Reese and he said that what you experienced was definitely a freak accident and that you can safely tow with your Reese Titan 20K 5th wheel hitch when you replace the Pivot Pin # RP58456. He had never heard of that happening and when he checked their records he only saw 1 other time that this has happened to somebody so what you experienced is a unique situation that I would be shocked if it repeated itself.

With all of that being said, I can definitely understand where your wife is coming from as that could possibly be sitting in the back of your guy's minds as you're traveling from now on. If you'd like to move to a different 5th wheel hitch just for the sake of peace of mind then let me know and I'd be more than happy to make a recommendation for you.

This same thing happened to me. I didn't notice it until I was hooking up to leave our campsite on a Sunday morning. Needless to say, I had to drive over 100 miles to find a welder to attach the plate as a field repair so I could get my rig home. I ordered another pivot pin, but now I do not have confidence in this hitch and will be ordering a Curt soon.

@JamesH I have had 2 of them break in the same spot by the Reese plate luckly I saw them both on a walk around, so to fix this i installed a 11/4 hitch pin. T here a little long but washer fill up the space nicely. and i have never seen one of them ever break or bend

My pivot pin sheared off while towing. It broke right at the base of the Reese Plate on the front and the pin almost slid out of the back just like another gentleman had happen to him. I ordered two replacements so I have a spare but I am wondering now if Reese has a quality problem. My wife now doesn't trust the hitch so I ordered a new Curt Q25. I'll keep the Reese R20 as a backup hitch but was wondering if Reese has any records of this happening ?.....The pin had came out 50% of the way before I could get the camper pulled off the road. This could have been a very bad day...instead it was just a ruined weekend camping as my father in law had to come pull my camper home...

It's not something that we've really ever heard happening before the instance described above (which was just asked/posted a few days ago). I'm confident in saying that the Reese Titan is a safe, reliable hitch, but I absolutely understand your hesitance with going back to it. We haven't heard of any problems from Reese directly, either.

@ChrisR It just happened to me today. It would be better if the pin was longer and threaded on both ends with safety pins.

Same thing happened to us today on our 4 hour trip home. Sheared off at the same location as described above. I hope they’ve beefed up their quality control on the replacement parts based on the comments above!
