When Should I Upgrade My Weight Distribution System From Simple Friction Arm

Question:

Does a weight distribution system hitch actually provide any advantage if the tow vehicle is rated for significantly higher than the trailer load? I currently have a 2006 F250 rated for 5000 lbs weight carrying and 12,500 lbs weight distributing. I currently tow a 28 ft enclosed trailer typically loaded to ~11,000 lbs. I currently use a trunnion style weight distributing hitch/receiver with a single friction sway control on the passenger side. I am purchasing a 2020 F250 rated for 20,000 lbs weight carrying and weight distributing and will be pulling the same trailer. Since the weight carrying rating is significantly higher than my load, I am thinking that I can simplify my setup. Thanks,

Normally we recommend using a weight distribution system when the trailer weighs 50 percent or more of the vehicle weight so it is not based off of the towing weight capacity of the vehicle. That is also not a hard and fast rule, if you are experiencing rear sag or a lot of sway with wind or passing vehicles it is a good idea to use a weight distribution system with sway control.

Since the 2006 Ford F-250 curb weight is around 7,000 lbs you probably will not have an issue and can continue to use the weight distribution system with the sway control friction arm like part # C17062 with a 11,000 lb trailer. If you start to see sag and/or experience sway I recommend to get a better weight distribution system. If you let me know the loaded tongue weight of the trailer I can recommend additional parts.
