What is Needed to Add Electric Brakes to a Trailer

Question:

Harbor freight has a trailer with no brakes at all. I want to know can I add breaks to a 4.8-12 4 lug tire/ wheel and or to a 4.5-12 5 lug Tire wheel combo. I want electric breaks not disc. I saw C51180 break controller will that work for this application. My Harley Davidson Road king Classic will be towing this trailer. Let me know please, Thanks

You can add electric brakes to any trailer, you just need to get the right parts. The first thing you need to add if you don't have one is a brake flange, which will need to be welded on by a professional welder (this is true for any kind of brakes). The flange will be on the end of the axle and the right one will depend on the size of your axle. You will need to verify your axle diameter, Based on your wheel size you are likely to need the Brake Mounting Flange for 2-3/8" Round Axle # 4-35.

Assuming you already have a hub and drum you will need the right brakes, which is determined by your axle's weight capacity, your mounting flange bolt pattern and the inside diameter and depth of your drum.

For example, the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA are for 3,500 lb axles, measure 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide (so that is the drum size they fit in) and fit a 4-bolt mounting flange that has bolt holes which measure 2-7/8" apart on center like Mounting Flange # 4-35 I referenced before.

I have added links to video reviews as well as a help article titled "Parts Needed to Add Electric Drum Brakes to a Trailer" which I highly recommend checking out.
