Do I Need Diodes When Using Utility Light as Reverse Lights

Question:

I have a cargo trailer that has two utility lights in the rear hooked up to a switch. I’m going to be adding a battery to the trailer and want to have the option to keep the utility lights and use them as reverse lights. I will be using a 3 way switch and using the reverse wire from the 7 way pin and power from the trailer battery. Do I still need to run diodes to each light?

Expert Reply:

Yes, I recommend to use the Roadmaster Hy-Power Diodes part # RM-792 to prevent electrical feedback since you are using the lights for both utility lights and reverse lights. A diode has 2 inputs and one output and will allow power to only flow one way. I have attached a diagram for your reference.
