I was able to confirm in the owner's manual for the 2012 GMC Terrain with factory tow package that it is acceptable to use a weight distribution system on the trailer that you are towing. It is a great idea to use a weight distribution system if the trailer you plan on towing weighs more than half of the weight of the tow vehicle to avoid sway and reduce rear sag on the vehicle which actually puts less stress on the vehicle suspension.

If the GMC Terrain does not have a trailer hitch, I recommend etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver part # e98865 which is a nice matte black finish and can be used with weight distribution. II have attached a video for your reference.

To choose the correct weight distribution system for your trailer you first need to determine the loaded tongue weight of your trailer. You want loaded tongue weight of your trailer to fall in the middle of the range that the spring bars of the weight distribution system is rated for.

For example the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37100ET has spring bars that are rated for between 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs tongue weight. This Equal-i-zer system also has 4 points of built in sway control to help keep the trailer in line when there is a large gust of wind or a semi passes on the highway. I have attached a very helpful article about how to choose the correct weight distribution system for your needs.

If you let me know more information about your loaded tongue weight, what you are experiencing (sway, rear sag etc) then I can make a proper recommendation for you.
