Installation Tips for Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch 75083 on a 1996 Ford Explorer
Question:
I cannot get a 1/inch drive socket on either bolt/nut as it is too tall and the tube interfers with the socket socket is not a deep well. I do not have a 13/16ths 3/8 drive, but I suspect it will be too shallow for the bolt as it protrudes about5/8ths of an inch. With or without an extension and a knuckle I ithink the problem remains.

As you can see in the video I have linked, our installer is using 1/2 inch drive tools to install trailer hitch # 75083 on a 1996 Ford Explorer. It sounds to me like you do need to use a deeper socket or a box end wrench. If you do not have these tools readily available, some auto parts stores will loan out tools so you do not have to go out and purchase them for 1 time use.
Make sure the bolts that go through the side of the frame are inserted from the inside of the frame and that the nut is on the outside of the frame.
