Are 4.80/4.00-8 and 5.70-8 Trailer Tires Compatible with the Same Wheel

Question:

Hi - on our small utility trailer we have 4.80/4.00-8 tires than are very old. Will your 5.7-8 tires fit the wheels? The specs say that the tires will fit standard 8 x 3 3/4 wheels. If I take the tire off the wheel, is the 3 3/4 measurement made from inner edge to edge of the wheel width? Can you show diagram or pic of how to measure? Bought 14 inch travel trailer spare tire and wheel from you previously, and was very happy with purchase. Thanks.

The distance between the bead seats is what determines the width of a wheel (see diagram).

A 4.80/4.00-8 and a 5.70-8 tire like the # AM10012 you've looked at are both usually mounted on a 3-3/4 inch wide wheel.

The difference between the two tires is that the 5.70-8 is 2 inches larger in diameter than a 4.80/4.00-8 tire (19.1 vs 16.1 inches in diameter) and the 5.70-8 is available in a B (715 lbs), C (910 lbs) or D (1075 lbs) weight rating while the 4.80/4.00-8 is available in a load rating B (590 lbs) or a C (760 lbs).

The Kenda # AM10012 tire you looked at has a C load rating, good for 910 lbs per tire or 1820 lbs per axle. The load rating D tire with a 1075 lb rating is part # AM10013.

I'll link you to several of our trailer wheel/tire help articles.
