Is An Additional Ground Needed for the Brake Controller Harness On a 2020 Toyota Tacoma

I have a 2020 toyota tacoma trd off road v6with tow package. Ive read on various places that the trailer brake harnesses on previous model years of the tacoma had insufficient grounds from the factory. This ment using adapter harnesses that had an extra grounding wire, and possibly drilling into the vehicle to mount said ground wire. Just wondering if this is also true for the 2020 tacomas, as it appears toyota changed the harness slightly. Can I use an adapter harness that plugs straight into the trucks connector or is it necessary to have an adapter harness with an extra ground?

The correct brake controller adapter plug for a 2020 Toyota Tacoma is going to be dependent on the brake controller. If you are using the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 for example then you'll need the Tekonsha Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers part # 3031-P which does indeed require an additional ground. That said, there is most likely an existing stud you can use for the ground without having to drill a hole.

The other option is the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 which is completely plug-n-play and not only do you not have to ground anything, you also don't have to drill into the dash to mount the brake controller.

For the Redarc Tow Pro Elite # 331-EBRH-ACCV2 you'll use the Wiring Adapter # 3031-S. The plug end will connect to the factory port on your Tacoma and the pigtail end will wire into the Redarc Controller.
