How To Select the Correct Replacement Winch Cable for a Hand Winch

Question:

Hello, I am currently in the process of changing out my hand winch cable. I have a Gheenoe with a total approximate total weight of 850-900lbs. I am using the winch to pull the boat up and out of the water with an estimated 35-degree slope 30 feet from a canal to the top. I have an older Peterson 2000 rated 2-speed winch in excellent shape. My calculations after thoroughly measuring the winch are 3/16inch cable total winch capacity 76foot and 7/32inch cable total winch capacity 57. I need minimally 40foot of cable. Which cable do you recommend because I notice that there are several cables on your website with the same thickness but different strength capacity. I also want galvanized cable because I am planning to use the boat and winch in saltwater. I am located in Miami, Florida, water everywhere.

In order to choose the correct cable length and diameter for a hand winch the best option is to reach out to the winch manufacturer and ask for the specific drum capacity. This is then what is going to dictate the correct length and diameter. If you are looking for an option with a length over 40' we do have a few choices, part # DL24044 for 3/16" diameter, part # DL24045 for 7/32" diameter, and part # DL24104 for 1/4" diameter. These options are all galvanized.

I have attached a full list for you as well. In regards to capacity, you will need to abide by the lowest rated component on your winch.
