Does Installation of Trailer Wiring Harness on 2020 Toyota Highlander Void Vehicle Warranty

Question:

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited Will installing the wiring kit void the warranty? Thank you

Good question, and the installation of any aftermarket parts such as a trailer wiring harness will not void the warranty on your 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, or any other vehicle.

The reason for that is because you are protected by what is called the Federal Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. This act says if something breaks on your vehicle and you take it in for warranty repair, the dealer must honor your warranty unless whatever you have added to your vehicle or its installation actually caused the problem in question.

So you can absolutely install the following wiring harness, and if you need, trailer hitch receiver, on your 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid without voiding the warranty:

- Vehicle Wiring Harness # C76CR
- Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C99FR

Our 2020 Toyota Highlander has the standard 4 pin connector which needs to be converted to 7 pin. We have a Prodigy RF brake controller on our RV. Which is the best?

Since the Prodigy RF only needs the 12V circuit activated on the 7-way (and not the brake output circuit) the best option for this conversion is the Wiring Kit # ETBC7L. This includes all the wiring necessary to make this happen.

Since most travel trailers today require a seven prong wiring harness what can be done to a doubt the 2020 highlander tow package to a seven prong plug?

Once the 4-Way harness is installed, you can simply add an adapter like the Tow Ready # 30717 to your Highlander. This will plug into the existing 4-Way to provide a 7-Way at the other end. If signal lights are the only things you need to power on the trailer - the white wire is the only one that needs to be grounded. The remaining blue, black, and yellow wires can just be capped off as they aren't needed. If, however, the trailer is equipped with electric brakes, a better option to upgrade to the needed 7-Way is the Wiring Kit # ETBC7, which includes all the components to make this conversion along with the extra wiring and circuit breakers needed to actually activate those additional circuits. You'd also need a brake controller like the Prodigy P2 # 90885.

I have a new 2020 Highlander XLE equipped with AWD and the factory hitch and 4 pin plug. However’ I need to tow a Mastercraft boat trailer that has hydraulic breaks. This trailer has a flat 5 pin connector. I need the 5th wire powered from the backup light circuit. Can I pull power from the wiring harness that passes from the lift gate to the body that powers the backup lights in the lift gate?

The Tow Ready Adapter # 20036 will work perfectly for this application. It will plug right into the existing 4-Way on your Highlander and the additional blue wire is what you'll splice into the reverse circuit wire, which can indeed be found on the factory harness you mentioned on the lift gate.

@ChrisR My concern is that the 2020 model switched the backup lights to LEDs. They have a much much smaller current draw than the previous incandescent bulbs and I wonder if the extra amps required by the solenoid could disable the lights or blow the fuse. Would it be a better approach to just purchase a 7-pin adapter kit For the 2020 Highlander as if the car did not have the factory wiring with something like a Hopkins 7-5-4 capability connector ?
