Question:

Vehicle is 1997 Mercury Mountaineer, 6700lb max and I think 500lb tongue weight?. Trailer is Aspen Trail 2050QBWE, 460 tongue and 4300 dry, # C17341 my best option? The price is attractive for sure.

I was able to find the owners manual for the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer and the 2-wheel drive can tow 6,700 lbs and the all-wheel drive can tow 6,500 lbs. Since the dry weight of the trailer is 4300 lbs more than likely you will be right at the towing capacity of the Mountaineer when the trailer is loaded. Because you are close to your towing capacity of the Mountaineer I definetly recommend a weight distribution system but the Curt Weight Distribution System with Shank - Pin-Style Trunnion Bar part # C17341 is not the best option because it does not include sway control.

The best option is the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control part # FA92-00-0800 because it will give you 2-point sway control to help keep the trailer on the road when you experience a gush of wind or passing semi. Since the loaded tongue weight will be more than the dry tongue weight the 400 lbs - 800 lbs tongue weight rating is what you need with the e2.

You will also need part # 63840 for a 2-5/16" ball or part # EQ91-00-6080 for a 2" ball.

I recommend to add the Derale Transmission Coolers - 1997 Mercury Mountaineer part # D12906 which is a tube-and-fin cooler to extend the life of the transmission when towing. You will also need Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury part # D13025 to install the cooler.
