Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2009 BMW X5
Question:
Hello, I am looking for a bike rack for 2009 BMW X5 which wont put pressure on the rear spoiler/brake lights. My X5 does not have a tow hitch and I would prefer not to have to install one. Thank you for your help

Trunk mount bike racks need to attach to the top of the rear hatch on your 2009 BMW X5. As a result they would all put pressure on the rear spoiler with the integrated third brake light.
The only remaining options are a trailer hitch or a roof rack. It looks like the X5 had a few different roof options. it could have a naked roof, flush rails that run front to back, and raised side rails that run front to back. I have included a link to the roof rack main page for you to view.
After getting all the parts for a roof rack and then adding compatible bike racks, the end cost can actually be more than a hitch and hitch mount bike rack. If you do decide a trailer hitch is an option, the most popular hitch is # 75600. I have included a link to the instructions for you.
With this hitch installed, you could carry up to 5 bikes. For a good 2 bike rack, I recommend the Swagman Titan, # S63400. This rack comes with anti-sway cradles, the ability to tilt, and an integrated cable lock. I have included a link to a video review of this rack for you.
With a hitch you also have more versatility such as towing if you ever needed to, or other hitch mount accessories like a cargo carrier. Plus, the bikes will be much easier to load and unload.
