Easy to Install Brake Controller Recommendation for 2013 Mazda CX-9
Question:
I have a 2013 Mazda CX- with hitch and 4 pin power. I am looking to buy a popup, which has a 7pin adapter as it has breaks. What else do I need to buy so my car will have 7 pin? The Mazda doesn't have the tow package, so it can tow up to 2,000lbs. Im looking at a pop up camper that has an UVW unloaded/dry weight of 1,750lbs, and a maximum GVWR of 2,500lbs. Does that mean that as long as I tow is empty / keep cargo less than 250lbs, I am able to tow it? Thank you,

You first will need to convert your 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install a brake controller. The easiest and best brake controller solution though is the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180 which basically just plugs into a mostly active 7-way and once synced to your smart phone is ready to tow. No complicated wiring or splices involved.
To convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller only requires the 7-way adapter kit part # ETBC7L. The 4-way of this plugs into the 4-way of your vehicle and once you run the included wiring and breaker up to the vehicle's positive battery post it's active enough to allow the Echo to function. This saves you from having to hardwire in a brake controller which requires tapping into the brake signal of your vehicle and running a few other wires too.
As long as the weight of your trailer is under 2,000 lbs when you are towing you'd be totally safe! So yeah you'd want to keep your cargo under 250 lbs.
