Do Roof Top Cargo Bags Affect Gas Mileage

Question:

I have a 2009 Chrylser Aspen, and at the end of the month will be driving from NY to South Carolina.....I will be traveling with my wife / two children and mother in law, so space is extremely limited. I am looking for a cargo bag that I can put on my roof and load with my luggage for the trip down. I am somewhat concerned about the drag the carrier will bring on mpg. Thanks for any help you can give.

Anytime you put some on the roof of your vehicle gas mileage will suffer. It really varies as to how much the mileage will suffer. I have heard of people taking a big hit in gas mileage, and I have also heard of people who claim a zero loss in gas mileage. It will really depend on how you much stuff you load into the bag as well as the overall aerodynamics of the roof of your vehicle.

I would imagine that you will lose a little bit of gas mileage, but it will not be too bad.

The Thule Interstate Cargo Bag # TH869 that you referenced would be a great choice for a cargo bag and is confirmed to fit on the factory roof rack of your vehicle.
