Comparing the 1-1/4 Inch and 2 Inch Draw-Tite Hitches for a 2016 Subaru Outback

Question:

Hello, I own a 1993 Flagstaff Cobra pop-up camper but need to find a hitch for my 2016 Subaru Outback 3.6r. I had originally planned on purchasing the Draw-Tite #36493 but started to second guess myself when it came to the hitch opening and the future use of the hitch. I need help choosing between a hitch opening of 1 1/4in vs a 2in. I also would like to get clarity on what those two options determine should I end up getting a bike rack or another trailer in the future. Thank you!

Helpful Expert Reply:

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75673 which has the larger 2" receiver tube opening is by far the better option for a 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon when compared to the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36493. The reason for this is because the larger receiver tube allows for a greater selection of hitch mounted accessories to be selected from. For example, we have many more options in regards to bikes racks/cargo carriers for the larger 2" receiver tube opening than we do for the 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. Therefore, I strongly recommend the above as the added cost is rather insignificant when considering the benefits.

If you don't already have a trailer wring harness, you will need one for your pop-up camper and I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # C56040 for this which is a plug-n-play option. Then you can get the Ball Mount Kit part # 989900 and hit the road.
