How Much of a Gap Should There Be In Double Jaw Of Reese Fifth Wheel Hitch

Question:

How close together should I see the jaws when they are closed on trailer?

According to Reese there will be about 1/4" of a gap in the jaws that is within tolerance once the trailer is hooked up to the fifth wheel hitch part # RP30047. Since the hitch has a dual jaw design it is impossible to not have a gap once hooked up to the trailer because the jaws need to open enough to hook up the king pin on the trailer. If your hitch has a larger gap than 1/4" in the jaws please let me know and we can troubleshoot further.
