Options To Support Suspension While Towing Heavier Fifth Wheel Trailer in 2017 Chevy 2500HD 4WD

Question:

I have a 2017 Chevy 2500HD Duramax 4WD short bed with a sticker payload of 2069. I am looking into getting a new 5th wheel and want to increase my payload to accommodate. What are my best options? Current Trailer 2018 290BH Reflection GVWR: 9,995 lbs. Hitch Weigh: 1,280 lbs. New 5th wheel specs Grand Design 31MB Hitch Weight: 1,834 lbs GVWR: 11,995 lbs I appreciate any guidance you can give.

There are ways to support the payload that you are putting in the bed of your 2017 Chevy 2500HD Duramax 4WD short bed however there is not a way to increase the payload rating that Chevy has set for the truck. The manufacturer of the vehicle sets the capacities based off of safety testing and there is not a way to increase the capacities.

If the hitch weight of the Grand Design 31MB is 1,834 lbs you are cutting it pretty close as far as your payload capacity is concerned. Technically it may be possible but you are pushing the limits of your truck bed which will most likely put stress on the suspension of the truck and may create rear sag.

If you decide to tow the heavier fifth wheel trailer, I recommend to use suspension enhancement Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2613 on the truck which is compatible with a fifth wheel hitch in the bed. The air bags will support the suspension and improve steering when towing a larger trailer. The bags will allow you to level out the payload so you won't experience as much sag or body roll.

I recommend to add a compressor system part # F2219 to make inflating/deflating the bags easier. The Firestone Air Command system is dual function so you can adjust the air bags side to side to level out the payload if you need to as well. I have attached a video for your reference.
