Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 and 6,800 Pound Trailer
Question:
I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 short bed 4x4 quad cab with a hemi. The trailer Im looking at is 33 ft long, has a Shipping weight of 6800 lbs and a tongue weight of 705. Whats the best system with anti sway?

Expert Reply:
When calculating tongue weight to determine the best weight distribution system, you also have to add in the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. That could increase the tongue weight total beyond the 705 pounds of the trailer. I recommend a system rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight.
For a system that comes with sway control and a shank, I recommend a Strait-line system, # RP66084. This system comes with dual-cam sway control that proactively and aggressively resist the start of sway by forcing the vehicle and trailer to ride in straight line. For a ball use # A-90 for a 2 inch or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch. I have included some links to the instructions and a link to our weight distribution and sway control FAQ article.
