Should 20 Year Old Trailer Tires Be Replaced

Question, I am looking to replace my trailer tires, ST 205/75D 14 but before I do I wan to make sure the ones I have are bad. When looking at the back of the wheel, is it supposed to be flat? Odd question I know. Mine are 20 years old and I guess have salt water corrosion on them, the back where the lug nuts go through is not flat but looks like it is worn or carved out some, thanks all, got to love these odd questions.

As a general rule of thumb, trailer tires should be replaced every 6 to 8 years regardless of wear. Even though an older tire might appear to have plenty of tread left on it, dry rot and cracking can cause tire failure.

The mating surface behind the bolt holes should be flat, and should mate perfectly with the face of your hubs.

I would definitely replace the tires before using the trailer again. If the wheels are showing signs of corrosion, I would also recommend replacing them with a galvanized wheel. A wheel with a galvanized finish will offer superior corrosion resistance.

To maximize tire life and weight bearing capability, be sure to keep your trailer tires inflated to the maximum pressure listed on the tire sidewall.

A 14 inch wheel typically uses a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. If this is the case, we offer a galvanized steel spoke wheel, part # AM20354 that would be a good replacement for you.
