Do Roof Mounted Cargo Bags Have to Fit In Between Roof Rack Crossbars on a 2009 Mazda 5

Question:

09 Mazda5 w/ Yakima crossbars no side rails. Will a cargo bag work with my vehicle 32inch between crossbars? Since most bags are longer than the spread, I am concerned with flopping the tail end over a bar. Are the bags best suited to fit between bars rather than across/over the crossbars?

Expert Reply:

When mounting a cargo bag to the roof of a vehicle the best way to keep the bag from sliding back and forth during starts and stops is to have the bag mounted between the crossbars. Depending on how full the Thule Interstate bag, # TH869, is, you may be able to fit it in between the bars. Otherwise, the bag is long enough and rigid enough at the ends that it should not just ooze over the bars at the ends. I have included a link to a video review and another link to all the roof mount bag options for you.

Make sure the roof and the bottom of the bag are clean to avoid scratching the vehicle. Using protective pad # RL100650 will not only protect the roof but help keep the bag in place.
