Your answer really depends on how big the tires are you want to use. We generally recommend 2" between the tire and frame and 4" between the tire and fender for suspension. From here you would mock up your axle setup to see if your measurements will work. Vehicle tires are not really intended for trailers but we do see used for off road applications often.

At 8 or 9 inches space between your hub face and spring center you're fine but at 11 inches per side, suspension, tire wear, and running gear problems could result.

It sounds like you may be building an off road trailer. A very popular option we see these days in this part of the market you may be interested in is the Lock N Roll Articulating Hitch # 336VS503505 and Lock N Roll Articulating Coupler # 336TS504.

Another option is to use a Timbren Axle-Less system so that the frame spacing would not matter. Also they have built-in suspension so you would not have to worry about maintaining leaf springs and related parts. Options like the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension Off-Road Tires # ASR35HDS02 are great to consider since it eliminates a lot of the technical and intricate details that a typical leaf spring setup requires.

Included are video resources with more information on these solutions.
