Solution for Trailer Wiring Error Message on Dash of Truck Towing Trailer with Exposed Wire 7-Way

Question:

I have a 2014 Interstate enclosed trailer that I tow with my 2016 Chevy Tahoe. Recently the “Check Trailer Wiring” and “Trailer Connected “ Alerts Flash on the console. What I have noticed is that not all the “bulbs” light up on the back running lights/ Brake lights. And the 7 way plug has about 1/2” exposed wires showing where the plug and wire connect, I’m sure its from years of pulling and pushing the plug into the “male” end of the truck. So with that said , is my problem simply the connection at the adapter and wire or something else? Thanks

Sounds like you have shorts between some of the wires that are exposed on the trailer side of the wiring based on what you mentioned. I'd start by inspecting everything there closer and seeing if you can find any exposed wire touching between circuits as that's what it sounds like is going on. It's also possible there's corrosion on the pins of the connector as well that maybe could be fixed with sandpaper.

If it looks pretty rough it might be your best option to go with a new 7-way plug like part # PK12706 which should take care of all problems during the install as you'll definitely find any wiring shorts and also fix any corrosion issues.
